Sylvan Avenue across the Trinity River Closed until 2014
Sylvan Ave. Bridge
The current Sylvan Avenue Bridge consists of three separate bridges. Two of them cross the east and west levees, and there is a low water crossing bridge over the Trinity River. The majority of this roadway referred to as Sylvan Avenue Bridge, is at grade in the floodway, and thus, becomes impassible during river flood events when the Trinity River flows out of its banks. The new Sylvan Avenue Bridge between the levees will be above the 800 year elevation level.
Construction has started on this project and it is anticipated to be substantially complete (weather permitting) in early 2014. The Sylvan Avenue Bridge is shut down to vehicular traffic and Trammell Crow Park and the boat launch are currently closed.
The new bridge will be an elevated, six lane bridge with two six foot sidewalks on either shoulder. There will also be a ramp from the roadway down to the floodway, allowing both vehicular and pedestrian access to Trammell Crow Park and its soccer fields and pond.
